Established by an act of the territorial legislature in 1864, the Arizona Historical Society is the state’s oldest historical agency, fulfilling its mission to “collect, preserve, interpret, and provide access to the history of Arizona. Its manuscript and artifact collections, housed in AHS museum facilities throughout the state, number in excess of 3 million objects that represent premier resources for recounting the state’s past as well as invaluable tools for promoting public understanding on contemporary issues.
