    It would be an understatement to say that Lidian Emerson has not loomed large in biographies of her husband. O. W. Firkins, in his 1915 biography of Emerson, wrote concerning Mrs. Emerson: “The tread of this lady through the unfrequented paths of Emerson’s domestic life is so noiseless that only a rare footfall here and there reaches the ear of the questioning biographer.” With the exception of the chapter on Lidian in Ralph Rusk’s biography, which draws on Ellen's manuscript, Firkin’s comment is verified by book after book in the long Emerson bibliography.¹ With two books on Emerson’s romantic and...
