    The Committee charged with planning this publication asked me to read and make abstracts of all doctoral dissertations and masters' theses, and to plan a "trend report" when the reading had been completed. It was their deliberate choice to have someone unfamiliar with social work literature come fresh to the task.     The School of Social Work of the University of Toronto achieved full graduate status during the academic year 1946-47. In retrospect it seems inevitable and entirely natural that the terms of this achievement would include a requirement that each successful candidate for a graduate degree must complete a piece of research and write an acceptable thesis.
