  4. 1 De Intellectu et Methodo
    (pp. 2-229)

    Hoc...

  5. 2 De Systemate et Historia
    (pp. 230-313)

  6. 3 Editorial Report on the Handwritten Notes for ‘De Systemate et Historia’
    (pp. 314-349)

The notion of ‘circle of operations’ is probably the most important contribution of the notes on system and history. The first set of handwritten notes in the file ‘De systemate et historia’ (47600d0e060) has to do with operation and meaning.

The first two pages distinguish ‘Meaning 1’ and ‘Meaning 2,’ that is, two meanings of ‘Meaning.’ The basic distinction is probably identical with the more familiar distinction in some hermeneutic literature between sense and reference. ‘Meaning 1’ is immanent intelligibility. Thus, a sentence makes complete sense. There is also meaning in this sense of immanent intelligibility in non-representational art.² In...

  7. 4 Report on Archival Notes Relevant to the Spring 1961 Course ‘De Intellectu et Methodo’
    (pp. 350-357)

It is likely that in the 1961 course entitled ‘De Intellectu et Methodo’ Lonergan either distributed or relied on the students notes that had been assembled for his 1959 course with the same name.³ The first set of archival notes that are definitely related to the 1961 course is dated 20 February 1961, probably two weeks into the course. It is possible Lonergan had said something about the problems of foundation, chasm, and historicity with which he began the 1959 course, and then, either in a transition to material on the notion of science or expanding on the problem of...

  8. 5 De Methodo Theologiae
    (pp. 358-589)
