    E.J. Pratt grew up on the Newfoundland seacoast, where the poet is most often a storyteller and where the poem, like the folk song, has a public function in affirming community, celebrating heroes, and lamenting death. Although he left Newfoundland in his mid-twenties, his poetic imagination continually returned to the seascapes of his childhood. He believed that poetry should express the speech and emotions of ordinary men and women, yet he knew poetry to be ‘an exacting, difficult craft, and it takes years of hard work, and education, and a sense of the language.
