Acta Musicologica is the official peer-reviewed journal of the International Musicological Society, which has its headquarters in Basel, Switzerland. It contains articles on musicological research of international importance in five different languages (English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish) and is published biannually (June and December) by Bärenreiter-Verlag.

The International Musicological Society (IMS) was founded in 1927 in Basle, where it has its headquarters ever since. It is a member of the Conseil International de la Philosophie et des Sciences Humaines (CIPSH), a branch organization of the UNESCO. Its purpose is the advancement of musicological research on the basis of international cooperation.
