    Kentucky has been a place of great botanical interest for many years. C.S. Rafinesque-Schmalz (1783-1840; Radford et al. 1968) did much of his botanical work while he was on the faculty of Transylvania University, Lexington, although he did not confine his studies to Kentucky. Charles Wilkins Short (1794-1863; Stuckey 1978) was probably the most outstanding person to work largely on Kentucky botany in the nineteenth century.
